Term 1, Week 8

Dear Community,

Solemnity of the Feast of St Joseph Saturday 19th March

“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24a. This Saturday the church celebrates and remembers the Feast of St Joseph. The husband of Mary and father of Jesus. His lineage can be traced back to King David which give legitimacy to his role as the earthly father and guider of Jesus. Moreover, Joseph was a carpenter who provided for his family and was a dutiful husband of Mary. St Joseph holds a special place in our family here at MacKillop, as our founder started the order of Josephites who took education to all throughout the great southern land. Our very own Sr. Marea is part of this order. A special Mass is being held this Saturday in our Parish church at 9am to celebrate his feast day. In memory of St Joseph and to mark this special day please recite the following prayer with your children.

Oh, Saint Joseph, foster-father of Jesus, most pure spouse of the Virgin Mary, pray for us daily to the same Jesus, the Son of God, that we, being defended by the power of His grace and striving faithfully in life, may be crowned by Him at the hour of passing. Amen.

Harmony Week

Yesterday the children looked wonderful in their orange and traditional homeland clothing. Thank you, parents, for making the effort to dress the children to proudly display our diversity. Tomorrow all children are asked to come to school wearing sport uniform as they will be breaking into their CLAN groups to participate in Harmony Week inclusion activities. The children will be involved in learning various cultural games, dance and art and craft activities. It is also a wonderful way for the children to bond across the stages from K–6 and get to know who belongs to each CLAN.

Homework Survey

Today a homework survey is being made available online for K – 6 parents to complete. We are encouraging all parents to complete the survey, which will then guide us from Term 2 onwards. For each parent that wants homework for their child there are just as many seeing it as a waste of time. There are also parents who feel there is not enough homework or that the types of homework are not serving a purpose. For each study undertaken on the merits of homework for Primary aged children there are differing views on the effectiveness of it. Now it is your turn to tell us about your thoughts in a very brief online survey. The survey will remain open for two weeks. Please click HERE to complete.

Congratulations to our Sporting Champs

Yesterday Byron K made the Broken Bay AFL team and on Tuesday night Krystal L qualified to swim at the Polding meet next week by placing 3rd in the under 11 Butterfly and 4th in the Breaststroke. Outstanding swimming Krystal – well done! Tomorrow selection trials are being held for soccer and rugby league next Friday. We wish all the children having a go all the very best.

Athletics Carnival Wednesday 23 March @ Mingara

The Year 2 – Year 6 Athletics carnival will be held at Mingara next week. By now all the students and parents should have received the Compass notification about the event. It is very important that parents indicate how children will be leaving the venue on this day so that we can sort out return bus transport arrangements.

STEM Video Game Participants

There are 59 Year 5 and Year 6 students who will take part in the STEM Video Game Challenge beginning tomorrow and every second Friday. The librarians have been overwhelmed by the response. We wish all the children all the very best in this fun academic challenge.

Enrolment for 2023 Kindergarten open now

Last week we held our Open afternoon and information evening. Enrolment interviews are being held starting next week. Please don’t delay and get your enrolment forms back in and book an interview. Please alert others considering our school that we are enrolling now. There are limited spaces in other grades open now if you know of someone wanting to enrol in our school. School Tours can be booked at any time, just ring the office for an appointment time.

 A Thought for the Week…

“To be upset over what you don’t have is to waste what you do have.” Keyes.

God Bless,

Frank Cohen
